Our Digital Archive of Early Yorùbá Newspapers Is Now Online
Ìwé Ìròyìn, first published in Abẹ́òkúta in 1859, was among the very first newspapers in any African language. Today, more than four thousand scanned pages of it and other early Yorùbá publications are available in our digital archive, created in partnership with a university library.
Automatic text recognition still struggles with older orthography and tone marks, so we are inviting volunteers to help transcribe key pages into modern spelling — a small task that will make this treasure searchable for generations.
